David Peterson del Mar
I am a Professor in History at Portland State University. I mostly teach a first-year, year-long course entitled Immigration, Migration, and Belonging. I love working with PSU students, as so many of them have overcome great challenges early in life. Along with my students, I volunteer extensively with at-risk students. My seven books include a history of the U.S. Family published by Palgrave Macmillan (The American Family: From Obligation to Freedom) and a history of nature loving published by Pearson (Environmentalism). My most recent is from Zed Books: African, American: From Tarzan to Dreams of My Father--Africa in the U.S. Imagination. My principal volunteer commitment is as president of Yo Ghana! We connect classrooms in Ghana and the Pacific Northwest so that they can learn more about each others' lives (yoghana.org) through friendship. I also love doing Narrative 4-style story exchanges to foster deep empathy. I am happily married with a young-adult son.
